AssangeDAO is a decentralized autonomous organization created to support Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks, in his legal battle against an extradition to the United States where he faces charges against espionage. In fact, he is facing 18 criminal charges which include breaking the USA spying law. This follows WikiLeaks’ publication of a large batch of secret classified files and diplomatic cables in 2010. Some of these files contained sensitive information about the operations of American troops in Iran and Afghanistan.

Since this is a serious offense, according to the United States, Assange faces a sentence of 175 years, if proven guilty. As a fact, Julian Assange, a whistleblower, journalist and publisher, has been in the Belmarsh Prison in London, United Kingdom since 2019. Prior to this, Assange hid in the Ecuadorian embassy in London for close to seven years, using his refugee status. His efforts to seek presidential amnesty from the past presidents of the US failed.

AssangeDAO’s mission

Some members of Cyberpunk and Assange’s family members formed the AssangeDAO on 10 December 2021 in response to the British Court ruling which overturned the ban for the extradition of Julian Assange to the United States. The DAO started mobilizing resources on the same day, 10 December, on telegram.

The main focus of the DAO is to support the fight towards the restoration of Julian Assange’s freedom through a bid to stop his extradition to the United States. In addition, the mission of AssangeDAO is to create a strong solidarity network whose major task is to raise funds and mobilize social support to raise awareness against the systematic failure of the justice system.

The DAO’s first priority was to raise capital to fund the release of the Censored NFTs which Pak created in collaboration with Julian Assange. The funds generated from the sale of the NFTs will be used to pay for the legal costs related to Julian’s case and to mobilize a coordinated campaign against his extradition.

As we have noted earlier, DAO aims to raise funds to support the legal processes related to Assange's case. It does that through raising ETH in exchange with its governance token, $JUSTICE. The ultimate motive is to buy a countdown NFT titled ‘Censored’ which Pak and Julian Assange released. The clockNFT shows the number of days Assange has so far spent in prison in the UK, since 2019.

Apart from the clock, the Censored NFT collection was an open audition showing tokenized messages which were created by buyers or “vanguards'' in the edition. As such, people were able to purchase any of these tokenized messages

The NFT “Censored,” consisting of 1/1 dynamic NFT and dynamic open edition, was auctioned on 7 February 2022, generating over $55 million worth of ETH. However, Pak donated the proceeds from this auction to Wau Holland Foundation as a contribution to Assange's legal defense fund and Free Assange campaign.

JUSTICE Token

JUSTICE is the token that governs the AssangeDAO. This means that the token holders will participate in making decisions on how the organization will use its funds. They will also decide what to do with the NFT as well as the future roadmap. The JUSTICE token is also liquid, meaning that its holders can trade it on centralized and decentralized exchanges where it is listed.
Judging from this discussion, we can tell that $JUSTICE is a recently developed token, existing on the ethereum network. It is yet to receive much publicity but with the way people have supported the campaign against Assange’s imprisonment and extradition, it may become popular very soon. One option which AssangeDAO has is to list it on centralized exchanges such as Gate.io, where there are many users and community members.

In particular, Gate.io has a Startup section where crypto projects list their newly developed tokens, which are already listed on other exchanges. This gives users the opportunity to invest in innovative projects thereby enhancing their chances of getting high returns on investment. AssangeDAO has a mission to source funds to help Julian to fight for his freedom. Cyberpunk members and some of Julian’s immediate family members formed the DAO, not just to raise resources but also to campaign for a ban on the extradition of Julian from the United Kingdom to the United States. So far, AssangeDAO has raised more than $55 million worth of ETH which it donated towards the legal fees and other associated costs.
