Somnia launches Metaverse Blockchain designed for millions of users

The Virtual Society Foundation (VSF) has launched the Somnia project, a family of L1 Blockchain and Omnichain protocols dedicated to connecting the Metaverse into a unified virtual society that can support the experience of millions of users.

Currently, the Metaverse is not complete and unified, and it is difficult for users and creators to cooperate. The accumulated value belongs to the holders of the Metaverse rather than the creators. No blockchain has yet been seen that can support millions of transactions at the speed and affordable cost required by a virtual society.

Somnia Blockchain is based on EVM developed by VSF to optimize projects originating from China. (VSF is an independent organization sponsored by Improbable.) In early prototypes, it can complete 100,000 transactions per second with sub-second finality. Somnia provides creators with a protocol that they can use to build worlds and enable assets, businesses, and avatars to move silkily across experiences. Somnia is inspired by the work and research of industry-leading partners like Improbable, who develop innovative technologies like MSquared Origin.

The Somnia Protocol allows existing NFT collections to be upgraded and rendered as interoperable 3D objects that are compatible with the Metaverse experience on the network, thereby increasing their value. The Somnia Protocol is expected to capture a significant share of the TVL in the blockchain gaming, Metaverse, and NFT sectors. The TVL in these sectors is close to $100 billion and is expected to continue to grow in the coming years.

Paul Thomas, founder of Somnia, said: "The launch of Somnia is not only a big step forward for the Metaverse, but also a game changer for blockchain technology. Most blockchains are well suited to finance, and we've seen great innovation in DeFi, but domain limitations have also prevented more social and creative enterprises from taking off. The protocol we are launching will realize the vision of an interconnected and composable Metaverse, and I hope it will bring new communities of collaboration to the entire space."

The launch of Somnia aims to kick-start a new creator economy model that incentivizes builders to share and reshape content. It will allow virtual characters and items to be sold anywhere, on any blockchain. All participants in the ecosystem will share value, and everyone will have a say. Somnia hopes to build a truly virtual society where the new creator economy can thrive.

Somnia's upcoming Betanet protocol will be integrated into Origin, MSquared's experience engine. This move will allow tens of thousands of participants to participate in music, sports and gaming experiences. In partnership with Avaturn, Somnia's Betanet will allow users to create interoperable avatars (interoperable virtual characters that can be used with each other in different virtual environments) and establish their own identity in the Metaverse. With the new avatars, users can explore large-scale events and immersive experiences. Improbable and Msquared have already produced large-scale Metaverse events such as the official virtual ballpark in partnership with MLB and the Kpop album release in partnership with TWICE.
