According to The Block, the organization responsible for the Ethereum Name Service (ENS) announced today that they are building their own Layer 2 network, called Namechain.

Namechain prioritizes interoperability and allows users to start using ENS from "any L2 network".

ENS Labs revealed that the launch of Namechain is expected to take place around the end of 2025. ENS is a Decentralization naming system built on the ETH blockchain, providing readable names for encryptionAddresses.

Jeff Lau, co-founder of ENS, said at the 'frENSday' event in Bangkok: 'Currently, the industry's success metric for Rollup is TVL (Total Value Locked). We don't need to prioritize TVL. ENS already has users, so we can genuinely prioritize things that other L2 solutions don't have.'

ENS Labs told The Block that the launch of Namechain is expected to take place around the end of 2025. Namechain, based on Zero-Knowledge Proof technology, is expected to handle and execute transactions outside the main Ethereum network, while maintaining Ethereum's 'complete security' at a lower cost.

Namechain, with a focus on interoperability, plans to incorporate L2-to-L2 bridge functionality into the protocol. "This allows you to operate while bridging and pay from the L2 of your choice," Lau said.

Lau also stated that Namechain, known as "L2 agnostic," is expected to lower the barrier to entry by allowing users to start their ENS journey from any L2 network. ENS Labs noted in a press release that the cost of name registration and management will be 99% lower than that of Layer 1 networks.

“Deploying to another public chain makes it difficult to directly embed the user experience into the protocol, while being able to control the entire stack from protocol to governance means that this Rollup is designed for ENS and naming services,” Lau said at the event on Monday.

According to Lau, the three prioritized tasks of the upcoming chain will be implementing fast finality using zkEVM, Open Source software, and maintaining Decentralization features of ENS.

Namechain is designed as part of a larger movement called "ENSv2", which is the second version of ENS announced in May, aiming to extend the naming service to the Layer 2 network of the Ethereum, making the service more flexible and economical.

The co-founder of ENS revealed that the team has chosen Namechain as its L2 partner, but did not disclose its name.

In September, ENS Labs announced that Paypal and Venmo have integrated ENS into their payment platforms. The team mentioned that ENS has over 2 million names registered on-chain and over 4 million names registered off-chain at that time.
