On 31 October OpenAI announced the launch of its search feature within ChatGPT. That development makes it one of the greatest competitors to Google, Perplexity and Microsoft’s Bing. Its new tool will enable its ChatGPT chatbot to scan the web and get answers to various queries. The feature also enables web users to get answers to their queries from various sources. The scope of the information which the users get is wide, from weather reports to trending news. This is because it gets the data from global news providers and other sources of information.
In the past ChatGPT had a fixed knowledge cutoff, meaning that the answers to the conversational queries would come from a specific period. With the new search feature the chatbot can now provide data in real-time making it more relevant to the users. Another important aspect is that the search tool provides source links to prove the authenticity of the information. Also, this enables the users to view the original information. As such, this increases transparency and fosters trust among its users. People can get the information they want, covering different aspects that include financial information, weather forecasts and sports results. It also covers content related to educational, recreation and business aspects.
OpenAI does not intend to launch a separate product but to integrate the feature with ChatGPT’s existing interface. Although there are times when the feature may determine when to search for additional information the users can trigger it to do so. During a pre-launch demo, Adam Fry, OpenAI’s ChatGPT search lead, demonstrated how to use the feature to find data about Apple’s stock. The results were encouraging as the tool displayed relevant information including an interactive stock graph. It also showed news related to the performance of the stock and its future price prediction. As explained before, the search results included some reference material. The new search tool is available on various ChatGPT platforms that include iOS, Windows, Android as well as desktop apps for macOS.
OpenAI’s launch of the ChatGPT search tool has heralded a new era in the information sector. Commenting on this in its blog, OpenAI said, “Now, chat can get you to a better answer: Ask a question in a more natural, conversational way, and ChatGPT can choose to respond with information from the web.”
Also, Louis Dreyfus, CEO & Publisher of Le Monde said, “We are convinced that AI search will be, in the near future and for the next generations, a primary way to access information.”

OpenAI has forged AI partnerships with several firms to ensure that its AI-powered search project is successful. Some of its partners include Condé Nast, Dotdash Meredith, Associated Press, Reuters, Axel Springer, Financial Times, GEDI, Hearst, Le Monde, News Corp, The Atlantic, Time, and Vox Media. Although the list is quite long the aim is one, to provide relevant information to the users. Also, these information sources meet certain criteria to control the quality of the content they provide.

OpenAI has not been the first firm to have a quality AI-powered search tool. Some of the leading autonomous AI search tools include Meta Search Tool, Microsoft Copilot, Perplexity, Brave, Consensus and Phind. For example, Perplexity, backed by Nvidia and Jeff Bezos, is a conversational search engine that optimizes information search to meet the individual needs of the users. On the other hand, Brave is a search engine which is built into the Brave browser.
Based on the 2025 tech trends, AI autonomy will likely increase in the future leading to new functionalities. For example, interactive personalized search may change how individuals interact with the available information. In the future the AI driven search tools may help in coordinating various important activities such as travel and shopping. Therefore, with the introduction of relevant features ChatGPT will likely play a greater role than just providing answers to a few queries. For example, the team said that it will keep on improving its series and regular models including ChatGPT 3, 4 and 5. They also highlighted that image input will come on o1 soon, probably in 2025. To this effect, OpenAI CPO said, “In general the o-series of models will be getting things like multimodality, tool use, etc in the coming months.”
Another team member explained that they would like to improve the ChatGPT search tool to the extent of enabling it to understand every user’s personal information and perform some tasks on their behalf. They are also working on introducing AI agents that can summarize reports. Regarding this Altman said, “We will have better and better models, but…the next giant breakthrough will be agents.
Markchen90 also explained some near future developments such as improving answers to the queries. He said, “We’re putting a lot of focus on decreasing hallucinations, but it’s a fundamentally hard problem - our models learn from human-written text, and humans sometimes confidently declare things they aren’t sure about. Our models are improving at citing, which grounds their answers in trusted sources, and we also believe that RL will help with hallucinations as well - when we can programmatically check whether models hallucinate, we can reward it for not doing so.” Thus, the OpenAI team is working on improving various aspects of its search tool.
