Far from the usual hype, what is the "Metaverse" and will it be happening?

What is the metaverse and will it create a new virtual world? In light of Facebook's intention to go to the world of The metaverse, and in the midst of this interesting experience that will impose on the whole world a new reality, it can make us experience the movie Avatar, and in the midst of the race to enter this world, and experience this idea, which may seem around the corner from us, is added to what the world has experienced since the Corona pandemic, which has significantly affected the usual life, and with the use of the Internet complete and integrated, which has strengthened the consolidation of the term metaverse in our reality, which can impose on us a new life with a totally virtual world that is inseparable from our reality in which we live.
In the very near future, all the people in the world around us will be able to communicate with each other through virtual worlds, bridging the distance in a way that we did not know before, and the word "The metaverse" will become an ordinary word that circulates at every moment, and between which two people can walk and talk in their daily business.
What is a "metaverse"?
In 1992, the American novelist Neil Stephenson wrote his most famous novel, "The Snow Wreck". In this fairy tale, humans talk and communicate with each other in a three-dimensional virtual environment, figuratively similar to the real world. It is in this novel that the term "Metaverse" first made its appearance.
Since then, the term "metaverse" has been used to explain the disconnected world based on virtual reality.
In the simplest terms, the "Metaverse" is a collective virtual space shared by a group of people. The word Metaverse combines two words, the prefix "META" meaning " After" and the second word "Universe", and is generally used to describe the concept of the Internet and communication in the future.
At first glance, this might look like a version of virtual reality (VR), but as Facebook has already spotted, Meta is now witnessing, this virtual universe might be the future of the internet.
Of course, you'll need a VR device to enter this virtual world that connects all sorts of digital environments together. But unlike today's VR devices, which are often used in games, this virtual world can be used for any activity in your life, whether it's working, gaming, attending concerts or going to the movies, or even spending time with your friends and everyone else in the other realm.
All you have to do is create your 3D image, or "Avatar", which will be your representative in the virtual world "Metaverse", and which will experience on your behalf everything you cannot experience in the actual world.
But so far, all this is still just ideas on paper, so there is no single, precise, and agreed definition of this metaverse.
Why has the Metaverse suddenly become the focus of everyone's attention?
Typically, the buzz around virtual and augmented reality technologies pops up every couple of years, but it quickly fades away. However, there is a lot of deliberate haze around the metaverse, this time among wealthy investors and tech giants, and none of them want to be left behind if it turns out that this world is really the future of the internet.
There is also a sense that, for the first time, the technology that allows this world to exist has begun to appear in some way, especially with the development of VR games and some technical complications that no longer feel like complexities as they used to.
Why are Facebook and Microsoft interested in the Metaverse?
Facebook, and its founder Mark Zuckerberg, made it clear recently that their main priorities are the world of the "Metaverse", not just social networks. The company has already invested heavily in virtual reality technologies via its own virtual reality headsets, making them cheaper than those of its competitors, and the company may even lose out on these devices, according to some analysts.
It has also started making VR apps, especially those that interact with the real world. Finally, as we have seen, the parent company's full name has been converted to Meta, expressing its clear and explicit desire to invest more in this virtual world.
However, the company estimates that the idea of the "Metaverse" to turn into reality will take another 10 to 15 years.
Besides, In the first half of next year, the U.S. software giant Microsoft said users of its Teams collaborative program will be able to appear as avatars - or hosts - in video meetings. Remote workers will also be able to use their avatars to visit virtual workspaces, which will eventually include replicas of employers' offices.
Will The metaverse really become a reality?
VR technologies have come a long way in recent years and are becoming increasingly popular. But the explosion of interest in NFT, which could provide a way to track ownership of digital assets more reliably, could indicate how the virtual economy is functioning. More advanced digital worlds may need a better, stronger, more stable connection, which could be available with 5G networks.
But for now, despite all this, the term "metaverse" is still in its infancy, and is only an ambitious idea, it may or may not happen at all, but we will see a fierce battle between the tech giants over the next decade, or perhaps longer on the arrival and success in developing this virtual universe.
