RSS3:The Information Renaissance in Web 3.0

    10 March 10:30

    Summary

    1. As Web 3.0 advances, RSS, a classic open-source concept, has returned in decentralized mode.
    2. RSS3 is not a specific application, but a decentralized content and social protocol.
    3. Based on the wallet address, the information flow aggregation of RSS3 will aggregate the user's on-chain footprint. Users can display/hide any assets or footprints according to their needs.
    4. RSS3 has the potential to be the personal identity center in Web 3.0, and thus become a key infrastructure for the next-gen Internet.

Older Internet users may still remember the days of RSS. In those days, various information websites and social media were not yet advanced, and personal blogs were the source of quality content on the Internet. Users often took advantage of RSS technology (Really Simple Syndication) to subscribe to blogs, website content, and get a timely push of updated content.

By virtue of RSS technology, users were able to obtain content updates without logging in to the website. Besides, it also increased website traffic and advertising revenue. As the Internet was growing more decentralized, the content was gradually migrated from web pages to apps developed by the company, and it was difficult to capture updated data through RSS. The birth of social media weakened the impact of RSS technology. Although RSS is no longer popular now, it has a number of loyal followers. In a world where information explodes and algorithms prevail, RSS is believed to be a major way to maintain independence and escape from information cocoons.

At present, however, the development of Web 3.0 has brought back the classic open-source concept of RSS in a decentralized manner.

    What is RSS3?

RSS3 is not a specific application, but a decentralized content and social protocol. RSS3 was first launched by former RSS practitioner Joshua in the second half of 2020. It is expected to be a fundamental tool in the Web 3.0 era. There are now many Dapps that have been developed and run on the basis of RSS3.

The unification of data flow and value flow is a big feature of Web 3.0. In terms of the data flow, RSS3 mainly focuses on the decentralized distribution of Internet data and provides the corresponding storage and display services for the decentralized data. In line with the logic of the classic RSS protocol, RSS3 allows users to subscribe to any Internet content that supports the RSS3 protocol. The protocol will automatically aggregate the updated information into an information stream for users to view on a dedicated reader. Regarding the supporting application, RSS3 has developed the domain name application Web3 PASS (Cheers) on which users can consume an ERC-20 token PASS to register the domain name service RNS. The project is committed to providing identity and homepage services for users in Web 3.0. Besides, users can use the matching RSS3 reader, Revery, to browse the RSS3 information stream they have subscribed to before.

To be specific, the information flow aggregation of RSS3 is based on the wallet address. When the user links the wallet address to RSS3, the assets associated with the address will be stored in the newly created RSS3 file and displayed on the homepage of Web3 PASS. RSS3 will also aggregate users’ on-chain footprints, and users can show/hide assets or footprints as needed. In addition, users can use Revery to subscribe to other users' addresses and obtain their latest movements on the Web3 Internet.

RSS3 aggregates data according to the wallet address, which breaks the supremacy of the traditional Internet platform. With RSS3, messages posted by users on different platforms such as Mirror and Twitter can be displayed on a homepage.

From the perspective of the network architecture, RSS3 achieves the decentralization of data ownership. User on-chain information (RSS3 File) is stored on many different network sub-nodes, which also lowers the possibility of data being monopolized. Network nodes fall into Serving Node and Relay Node. The former constitutes a service node group to jointly manage and store files on the network, and the global indexer consisting of the relay node is mainly in charge of the security and governance of the network.

Meanwhile, in light of the lack of incentives caused by the open-source characteristics of the classic RSS protocol, the RSS3 project is managed by the RSS3 DAO. DAO has the power to elect governance node groups and the right of global indexers. It can also vote to be involved in the incentive mechanism and many other matters related to the bottom layer of the network. On February 12, 2022, RSS3 issued the same-name token RSS3 on Cooper Launch, with a total of 1 billion tokens to be gradually released within 5 years. $RSS3 will be primarily responsible for the governance of the DAO.

    Conclusion

Obviously, although it is RSS service that inspired the development of RSS3 to a large extent, the use of RSS3 is quite different from that of RSS service used in the Web 2.0 era. Compared to the RSS service that simply aggregates sub_script_ion information on the Internet, RSS3 displays stronger social attributes and will aggregate all on-chain and partially supported off-chain information under a certain address. It is likely that RSS3 will be the personal identity center of Web 3.0, and thus become crucial infrastructure for the next-gen Internet.
