Powell refused to reveal whether he would continue to serve as a member of the Federal Reserve Board after the end of his chairmanship. At an event in Dallas, when asked if he would consider becoming the first Federal Reserve chairman to continue serving as a member of the Federal Reserve Board after the end of his chairmanship, Federal Reserve Chairman Powell simply stated that he would be committed to completing his term as chairman. Powell said, "I must serve to the end, this is the most important thing during my term. This is what I have decided and what I have considered." Powell's term as a board member will expire in January 2028. The last former chairman to continue serving after the end of his term as Federal Reserve chairman was Marriner Eccles, who stepped down as Federal Reserve chairman in January 1948, but did not step down as a member until July 1951.
