Brazil Brings Out Digital IDs Based on Blockchain Technology
Brazil has taken another step towards the adoption of blockchain technology after officially rolling out blockchain-based digital IDs. The concept of digital IDs is relatively new, but countries around the world are currently working on integrating them into their frameworks. The adoption of decentralization technology has been faster in Latin America as compared to other regions around the globe
It is important to note that Rio de Janeiro, Goiás, and Paraná will be the first to issue these IDs as a part of the new national identity program of Brazil powered by blockchain technology. As per the government’s estimates, over 214 million Brazilians will soon be using blockchain technology via decentralized digital IDs
It is crucial to note that the IDs will be hosted on the private blockchain created by Serpro, the national data processing service of Brazil
The official decree reads that the entire country will be able to issue identity documents through blockchain technology by November 6, and Alexandre Amorim, president of Serpro, said that the immutability and decentralization of blockchain technology make it ideal for the digital identification project initiated by the government of Brazil
“Blockchain technology plays a critical role in protecting personal data and preventing fraud, offering a more secure digital experience for Brazilian citizens. Utilizing the b-Cadastros blockchain platform significantly enhances the security and reliability of the National Identity Card project,” he added
According to the regional government, the digital ID project is crucial in targeting organized crime and will allow government sectors to work together, offering a simpler way to access services and streamlining administrative records. More importantly, a similar initiative was taken up by the city of Buenos Aires, Argentina, allowing the residents to access identity documents via a digital wallet
For the past 30 years, Brazil has been working to unify identity issuance across its almost 30 states, and it seems that the country has found the solution to its problem in blockchain technology
As reported earlier by Bitnation, the president of the central bank of the country, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, recently approved a law that specifies the roles of securities regulators and the country’s central bank in regulating digital asset providers.
