This analysis will focus on the recent documentary whose aim has been to unveil the identity of the bitcoin founder, Satoshi Nakamoto.

Cullen Hoback, a renowned filmmaker, produced a documentary entitled Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery, in a bid to [unveil the identity of Satoshi Nakamoto, the bitcoin founder](https://www.gate.io/post/Crypto_News/status/7189700 "unveil the identity of Satoshi Nakamoto, the bitcoin founder"). And indeed, Hoback unveiled Peter Todd who is a known bitcoin developer as Satoshi Nakamoto. However, controversy shrouds that revelation since Peter Todd has openly and vehemently denied that he is the bitcoin creator. This means that the bitcoin mystery has not been resolved. Before delving further let’s look at Satoshi Nakamoto’s contribution to the cryptocurrency sector. There is no doubt that Satoshi Nakamoto was the inventor of bitcoin and the innovator of cryptocurrency in general. Nakamoto created bitcoin in 2008 and launched it in 2009. There is a high possibility that a clue of who Satoshi Nakamoto is could be in one of the digital addresses he/she owns. Nakamoto disappeared after he mined 1 million BTC. And these coins have never been moved since that time. Considering that these coins are worth more than $55 billion at bitcoin’s current valuation, if Nakamoto is still alive he/she is one of the richest persons on earth.

Behind this bitcoin mystery many people wonder why Nakamoto has chosen to remain unknown. A possible reason is that he/she has remained anonymous due to the fear of being arrested. More significantly, due to the fact that the bitcoin creator is unknown many people have maintained their focus on the digital asset. Likewise Nakamoto's anonymity has remained essential for the birth and perpetuation of a reliable form of digital currency. Its users are not focused on the motivations of its creator or his/her identity. As such, the digital currency is not linked to any nationality or country, making it a truly universal digital currency.

## Theories on Satoshi Nakamoto's Identity
Over the years several people have been mentioned as possible bitcoin creators. Nonetheless, no acceptable conclusion has been reached regarding the identity of Satoshi Nakamoto. For that reason specialists like Cullen Hoback are still trying to identify the cryptocurrency founder. Definitely, personal claims alone cannot make the world believe that someone is Nakamoto. Instead, there should be solid proof on the role of the individual or organization in creating bitcoin. For instance, the world has not accepted Craig Wright as the bitcoin creator despite his claim to be the one.

In fact, through the HBO Bitcoin documentary that was broadcast live on 8 October 2024 Cullen Hoback claimed that Peter Todd was the bitcoin inventor. The claim has emerged due to Todd’s long term involvement with bitcoin. Despite being a well-known bitcoin developer and a crypto expert Todd has a very strong understanding of the asset. He has been a vocal advocate of decentralization which was a core aspect of Satoshi’s vision on bitcoin.

Todd’s knowledge and expertise of cryptography and the distributed system sync with Nakamoto’s skills and experience. The HBO documentary also shows that Todd had been in contact with early bitcoin developers. In addition, the emails and posts in forums which Nakamoto made match his technical understanding and writing style. Based on these attributes Hoback concluded that Todd is Satoshi Nakamoto. And he has insinuated that Todd might have shifted from being the bitcoin creator to a developer so as to blend with the community and avoid any possible suspicion.

On the contrary, Todd has denied that he is Satoshi Nakamoto. Also, the documentary did not conclude with clarity that Todd was the bitcoin creator. Thus, it remains a speculation that he is the bitcoin founder. In the end, the identity of Nakamoto can only be confirmed through concrete cryptographic proof such as the ability to move Nakamoto’s bitcoin. The proof in terms of having the relevant private key would also be essential.

Nick Szabo: Over the years some analysts have speculated that Nick Szabo was the bitcoin creator. His knowledge of decentralized currencies make many people believe that he may be the bitcoin creator. However, Szabo has refuted the claims that he is Satoshi Nakamoto.

Craig Wright: As previously hinted, Craig Wright is the only person who has claimed that he is Satoshi Nakamoto. In 2016, Wright, an Australian computer scientist, publicly claimed that he is the bitcoin creator. He even provided unverified cryptographic proof, which the crypto community dismissed as fake. Finally, in 2023 a United Kingdom court said that Wright had lied in his claim that he is Nakamoto. Thus, the crypto community has rejected his claims to be the bitcoin inventor.

Dorian Nakamoto: Another section of crypto experts have identified Dorian Nakamoto, a graduate in physics from California Polytechnic, [as the bitcoin creator](https://www.gate.io/learn/articles/decrypting-satoshi-nakamoto-s-emails/1999 "as the bitcoin creator"). Probably, the greatest reason for their speculation is Dorian’s surname that matched Satoshi’s pseudonym. Apart from having previously worked on computer engineering, he had similar personal attributes to Satoshi Nakamoto such as his temperament, mathematical skills and Japanese descent. However, Dorian Nakamoto denied being the bitcoin creator and claimed that he had limited knowledge of digital currencies.

Hal Finney: One reason some people believe that Hal Finney is Satoshi Nakamoto is the many years he spent working with bitcoin. Also, he was one of the pioneers in cryptography and the first person to receive bitcoin from Satoshi Nakamoto. In addition, he was one of the first individuals to run a bitcoin node. If he was not Nakamoto then he was closely connected with  the cryptocurrency creator. However, Finney, who died in 2014, also denied that he was the bitcoin creator.

Satoshi Nakamoto- The Group Theory: One of the popular Satoshi identity theories is that Satoshi Nakamoto was not an individual but a group of people who created bitcoin. The reason for such a theory is the perfection that was used to develop the cryptocurrency. To date, Bitcoin is one of the most secure cryptocurrencies on the market. For example, the HBO documentary Money Electric has speculated that the National Security Agency (NSA) might be the group behind the creation of bitcoin. The foundation for this assertion is that NSA is renowned for its capability when using cryptography.

## Insights from "Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery"
The documentary delves into the history of bitcoin and other pioneering cryptocurrencies.  Although it suggests that Peter Todd is the bitcoin creator it has not given convincing proof to that effect. Clearly, though, Todd has much expertise in cryptography and his technical ability might correspond with that of Satoshi Nakamoto. In addition, Todd had a personal relationship with Adam Back who used to have close communication with Nakamoto. However, Todd has denied that he is the bitcoin creator. Hoback’s documentary, Money Electric, has failed to prove beyond doubt that Peter Todd is the bitcoin creator. In addition, Todd refuted the claims that he is Satoshi Nakamoto.
