Historical Sites in the Metaverse: The Virtual Museum

The metaverse has been the buzzword on the internet recently. Several futuristic individuals, firms and communities have taken a keen interest in it as it is gradually taking the face of the future of the internet. Even though the term metaverse is still finding its footing as to a definite definition, it keeps becoming clearer by the day that we can only keep imagining and evolving into the realities and possibilities the metaverse could provide.

When we hear the word metaverse, what comes to mind at first is a virtual world, headsets and probably gaming. But in reality, it is Gradually appearing that the metaverse is a combination of Artificial Intelligence, Virtual Reality, Blockchain technology, Gaming, Real Estate, NFts, Ownership, Decentralization and much more.

Unlike the dystopian de_script_ion Neal Stephenson wrote in his 1992 novel, “Snow Crash”, where the word “Metaverse” was first coined, we see something a bit different, something that brings a bridge between the worlds of Physical Experience and its virtual reality, playing a big role in communication, learning and breaking proximity barriers.

Simply put, with the metaverse, you can be anywhere you want to be virtual, having exactly the same experience and participation as it would have been if you were there presently. With these opportunities in this technology, we see new fonts appearing in the preservation of historical sites and virtual tourism.


Virtual Museums and Historical Sites



During the global pandemic, a lot was revealed to the world as to how the future of work and events will start taking place. The likes of video conferencing calls and meetings using several mediums, digital apps and measures to connect people in every part of the world began to evolve. It was apparent that we needed to move past the era of necessary physical participation. Hence the necessity for innovations for the future of work and events must arise. Virtual Reality and metaverse to the rescue!

The Tourism sector had a fair share of this challenge as there was a reduction in visitations as a result of the pandemic. However, After the pandemic, Museums are now exploring the means of virtual reality to give physical tourism experiences with the aid of virtual tours. Also, on the other side, several creators are building metaverse museums and aesthetic sites using Blockchain technology and NFTs.

Some of the amazing and recent projects to check out on the metaverse include..,

Zepeto “Peaceful Hill”: The National Museum of Korea has announced its upcoming Metaverse museum named Peaceful Hill. From October 8, it will be its debut metaverse global map on Asia’s largest virtual reality Platform, Zepeto.

In this metaverse, Visitors can walk around the map with their avatars, meet friends, chat, sit on rocks for meditation, climb trees, uncover hidden gems to light the Buddha statue, and snap selfies with the statue within the secret cave. The Peaceful hill consists of two collections from the National Museum of Korea, Pensive Bodhisattvas.

Musee Dezentral: This is the first decentralized Metaverse Museum, seeking to change people's perceptions of art by removing it from the confines of physical space. It is said that some parts of the museum will be dedicated to blockchain education and the history of NFTs.

Currently on display in the main gallery is Cryptopunks #4446, and the famous Damian Hirst’s collection of real-life artworks is represented as a collection of 10,000NFTs. The goal of Musee dezentral in bringing about the decentralization of museums is a giant leap towards the role of a metaverse in the future of tourism.

The First Metaverse Museum of History: Also known as the moment in history, the museum is a place where people meet experienced people and have interesting discussions about history. The Museum will house the world's most comprehensive collection of iconic historical moments, with over 1000 iconic pieces built On the Ethereum blockchain. Each iconic piece is minted as a non-fungible token, and each NFT contains interactive categories that add to the entertainment value—constructed for instructive story-telling and concocted theories based on certain occurrences.

Museum of Digital Life (MoDal): is a Number of the co-users museum, live-streaming digital display with art ranging from 2D photographs and films to 3D static and interactive objects and entire 3D worlds and experiences. It may evolve into something even more in the future. It is a museum where technology, arts, engineering and mathematics intersect.

House of Dreams: House of dreams is a virtual museum, the first of its kind to compile historical fashion collections of over a century. It was launched by L’officiel on September 28, 2021, and went live on the 30th, with over 18 galleries displaying artworks from the magazine's over 100-year collections, which were exhibited as NFTs. This mega fashion and luxury metaverse will be permanently located on the digital land purchased by the company on Sandbox.

Fengyuzhu Metaverse Digital Art Museum: is a virtual art environment built by Fengyuzhu on Baidu's Xirang metaverse platform and available to M generation users. Users can see immersive exhibitions, engage in entertainment, socialize, and purchase digital art collections on the platform as the museum uses a virtual engine to carry out 3D design and development as part of the Fengyuzhu metaverse's cultural amenities cluster. It will introduce top-tier digital artists from both within and outside of the country in the future.

Daily, companies and projects are working towards creating a virtually inclusive future on the metaverse. And metaverse museums are a part of that anticipated future.
