[TL; DR]

🔹 The God Hates NFT protest turned out to be a marketing stunt.

🔹 Bobby Kim organized the God Hates NFT protest to promote an NFT collection- Adam Bomb Squad.

🔹 After the protest an NFT project called God Hates NFTs produced NFTs based on the event.

🔹 There was also a production of special special attire with in_script_ions “God Hates NFTs”

On 20 June, a crowd gathered in SoHo Street in Manhattan protesting against NFTs. These protesters carried placards with the in_script_ions ``God Hates NFTs,” and “Crypto Is A Sin.” At the same time they chanted “N-F-Ts not for me.” These were unexpected visitors on the NFT.NYC event which Coinbase hailed as “Super Bowl of the NFT World.” The NFT.NYC event, with a theme “Diversity in NFTs' ', attracted many NFT players from various places around the world. Evidently, the group staged the protest in a Westboro Baptist Church style as they used the term “God Hates...,” associated with the church.

The slogan “God Hates NFT '' resonated with many people because of the existing state of NFTs and the cryptocurrencies. Since the entire NFT and crypto market is in a strong downtrend many people made sense about the meaning of the slogans. This is because some people who entered the NFT and crypto markets this year encountered large losses. As such, they definitely “love and hate” NFTs. Therefore, NFT fanatics would agree with the protestors’ sentiments.

However, that was a fake protest, used as a guerrilla marketing strategy. Bobby Hundreds, the streetwear artist in NewYork, was the man behind this stage managed NFT protest as a marketing stunt for The Hundreds, a popular clothing brand. In fact, The Hundreds was holding a week long event promoting its NFT collection, Adam Bomb Squad. Therefore, the intention of the fake protest campaign was to promote this collection.

Interestingly, The Hundreds used a similar guerrilla marketing strategy before. During the same event, the NFT.NYC, last year, they used a protest-like marketing campaign where they pulled out a billboard with an advertisement, 'NFTs Are A Scam. However, the team was wearing T-shirts with the same slogan- 'NFTs Are A Scam.

Even though people realized that the protest was stage-managed there were varied reactions to it. While a section of observers thought that the protest was real, others felt that faking it did not make much sense. Some people might have related it to the NFTs protests of 2021, where people referred to NFTs as “right-clickers” or “worthless jpegs. Some people even said that such a marketing stunt was a way “too far from the norm”.

The organizer of the God Hates NFT Campaign

According to Ad Age, Bobby Kim acknowledged that he organized that guerrilla marketing campaign. Also he is the one who created the slogans and recruited the “protesters.” Bobby felt that the ‘fake protest” achieved the intended objective- being humorous and letting the people laugh. He said, “I think people need to just let off the steam. Let's not take this so seriously, we're all having fun. Let's just be hopeful.

This protest had other results worth noting. The first one is a compilation of NFTs called “God Hates NFTs.” In fact, an NFT project called God Hates NFTs used the characters that participated in the protest to mint a series of NFTs. Minted free of charge; the 5,022 pieces had a floor price which, at one time, rose to 1.8 ETH.

Commenting on the God Hates NFTs NFTs, Bobby said “I have nothing to do with God Hates NFTs, but they stole our design, and their success should be credited to us.”

Conclusion

On the face of it, the slogan God Hates NFTs implies that God, the Almighty, has taken a stance against NFTs. And it also portrays that the protesters really hate the NFTs. However, the reality is different. The so-called God Hates NFTs is, in fact, some crypto enthusiasts stage-managed protests, to draw the attention of members of the surrounding community. In reality, this is a marketing campaign to draw people to a new collection of NFTs. There were varied reactions when many people realized that it was a fake protest. Some took it as a humorous act while others believe that such a marketing stunt was too far off. However, the end result includes a series of “God Hates NFTs' ' NFTs and some breathtaking clothing attires.
